Mrs. Pereira-Bragança showing me her home – the Braganza House east wing, Chandor, inland Goa.
A once-grand 17th century Portuguese mansion, stretching along one whole side of Chandor’s village square, this is a pre-ruined, but magnificent mansion furnished with antiques dating back centuries and coming both from Portugal and other European powers and from its oriental colonies – Malacca, Macau, the African coast, as the family made their wealth from farming the coconut and rice paddies of the area. India took Goa in 1961 and keeps looking the other way from these memories that dot the large inland territory; I believe that with time, and hopefully some common effort, wisdom will prevail and shall allow for a part of this heritage to be saved. As monsoons go, there is not much time left though.
